About Toto
The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour helped them become a household name around the world.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is financially in trouble. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with an entirely different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
